Yangon
Proud and reborn after a poignant past, Yangon is Myanmar’s most happening city.
Formerly known as Rangoon, Yangon is the colonial center of Myanmar brimming with British colonial-era architecture. Towards the end of colonial rule, the city became a base for the Burmese Independence movement. Destruction and neglect dominated much of its fate in the following years. They are now considered medals of honor in the country’s gilded history.
At the focal point of the spacious parks, grand buildings, and traditional wooden houses, the Sule Pagoda soars to the sky. Not far away, Shwedagon Pagoda reminds visitors of Yangon’s true identity, crowning the city’s skyline with its massive golden stupa. It serves as an active praying site for locals, and its spiritual profundity is much-revered among Buddhist communities. Head out from the magical spell of the pagoda, and a short drive will take you to Chauk Htat Gyi. There, arguably the most fascinating example of the reclining Buddha image awaits.
The city is a riveting amalgam of the west and the east. But, life in Yangon unfolds far beyond the colonial mansions. At its heart, it harbors the hectic spirit of Southeast Asia to the bone, offering visitors invigorating scenes of daily life. To get a taste, head downtown after catching a moment’s rest in the parks. There, you will find the captivating charm of local traditions in full motion. Tea houses swarm with a motley of smells belonging to a different tea product. Indian and Chinese quarters reverberate in a shopping and tasting frenzy. Last but not least, seek out an antique shop and explore precious relics from Yangon’s authentic culture.
