Pokhara
For all the spiritual, cultural, and natural treasures in Nepal, it is perhaps the marvelous Pokhara that pridefully harbors all. The lakeside city is serene and picture-perfect, set in a valley in the world-famous Annapurna Range. Beyond being a metropolitan city, Pokhara is a point of departure for the most famous trekking routes of the Annapurna. It is also a long-time pilgrimage for alpinists. There is no telling if it is the atmospheric mountains or the spectacular Phewa Lake that makes Pokhara so enchanting. But one thing is for sure: a day or two in this Himalayan wonderland will lead to a sensory overload that will stick with you for a while.
Phewa Lake beckons in the verdant landscape, all immaculate, captivating photographers with a different scene at each time of day. You can take a ride in one of the traditional “doonga” boats and savor the ambiance, or stroll around to take some time away from the city. The cultural offerings of Pokhara are also worthy of seeing in the Old Town. It bestows a spiritual flair with Newari houses and temples hosting several handicraft shops where you can admire handmade baskets, carpets, and ceramics. The International Mountain Museum pays homage to the great Himalayas and the people who depend on them, while the Gurkha Museum is the perfect place to explore the military history of Pokhara.
If you fancy a short trek in the region, head to World Peace Pagoda. It soars on a hill right above the lake, with the snow-laden mountains looming in the background. Contoured by the dark green forests below, the sight of the pagoda is so theatrical that it will leave you breathless.
