Samadhi Buddha Statue

This 7-feet-tall statue is one of the most appreciated statues of the Buddha in the world, sitting in a verdant corner at the Mahamevnāwa Park in Anuradhapura. It is the last of the four statues surrounding the sacred Bodhi tree. What remains from its original gilded structure is the sheer dolomite marble that constitutes it. Dating back to the 4th-6th centuries, the statue is the finest of its kind in all of Sri Lanka. Samadhi Buddha Statue is the depiction of the enlightenment state of the Buddha. In this state, Buddha sits in a cross-legged position with his palms facing upwards.  

As you walk towards the Samadhi Buddha on your trip in Anuradhapura, you will be struck by its improbable state of serenity. For all the lush forest setting that surrounds it, it is perhaps the entranced expression on the Buddha’s face that makes the scene so captivating. Some say that if you look at the face from one side, the Buddha appears to be smiling. From the other side, an uncertain mood of sadness seems to radiate.
