M’Hamid
An astonishing oasis in Zagora, M’Hamid marks the end of the beaten track and the beginning of sand fields stretching into the horizon. Other than its irresistible appeal as a gateway to the desert, the town is notable for the seven ksars (fortified villages). They are remnants of a long-forgotten but glorious era of trans-Saharan trade.
What remains of this abundant era are verdant palm groves, azure ponds, and a handful of traditional adobe houses. M’Hamid is considered the humblest of the desert oases in the Sahara border. But, it does not lack the allure of the desert wonderland that draws many travelers to the region each year.
There are several options for trips in the desert at M’Hamid, as long as you are ready to head out on the velvet-like plains. Camel tracks and jeep safaris guided by the nomadic residents of the Sahara are the most popular choices. The landscape hosts ethereal light shows from dusk till dawn. You will have a marvelous time under star-studded skies surrounded by fellow travelers and locals in the camps. M’Hamid is the complete package in terms of the Moroccan desert experience.
