Lake Myvatn

The fusion of turquoise, emerald, and earthy-brown makes the picture of Lake Myvatn worthy of seeing. But with the impressive biodiversity nestled in the exuberant terrain, it is much more than a pretty face seeking attention. In the Myvatn area, most of the life activity concentrates around the lake. Geological forces truly worked their magic in Myvatn for thousands of years like a skillful artisan. And products of this slow process embellish the land on all four sides today.

Breathtaking panoramas and an intriguing volcanic landscape mark the site.  Yet, the stars of any trip to Lake Myvatn remain the birds that dwell on the shallow and nutritious waters. They offer a vivid sight among the geographical wonders of the region. The area crackles with the daily activities of several bird species, especially ducks, and many more dwell in the surrounding moorlands.

Volcanic activity formed the lake some 2,000 years ago—it continues to give shape and spirit to the region through earthquakes and eruptions. Small crater-like circles of Skútustaðagígar dot the land on the south banks of Myvatn, making the landscape even more dramatic and beautiful. Further north, the eerie-looking lava pillars of Dimmuborgir tower over volcanic fields and lava tube caves. Popular with travelers and locals alike, the area has a central place in Icelandic folklore and has inspired many artistic works in modern times.
