The mighty Rurikids founded it; Soviet revolutionaries ruled over it. The Moscow Kremlin has been a seat of imperial power for centuries, marking the opulent Russian land with a profound history and proverbial renown. Enclosed by crimson walls and the famous Kremlin towers topped delicately with emerald green, the Kremlin is a complex of palaces, cathedrals, and domestic churches. Today, it constitutes an enduring symbol of Russia’s history and serves as a political headquarters for the government. The Kremlin’s proximity to the Red Square only adds to the attested popularity of the site. And, it hosts thousands of visitors every year in its rich museums.

From French occupiers to the tsars and leaders of the Soviet era, rulers of the Kremlin each set about to leave their mark on the architecture and layout of the complex. Most of what you see today was built by the Italian masters in early tsardom. Each of the Kremlin’s 20 towers is a unique sight on its own, most of them crowned with a red star in the Soviet era. Among them, the Cathedral of the Assumption shines like a pearl in a sea of blood. It is one of the most photographed sites in the complex, featuring onion-shaped golden domes over its snowy-white facade and offering visitors a playful visual divergence. But no building on the site beats the elegance of the Grand Kremlin Palace. Bold in beauty, the palace is home to several ceremonial halls, all open to visitors.
