Hoi An

Set on the central coast of Vietnam, Hoi An is a peaceful town blessed by natural happenings all around. Between the 15-18th centuries, it has been in the limelight among the empires of China, Japan, and Europe as a major fishing and trade port in Southeast Asia. Its popularity, however, waned significantly after the 18th century. Naturally, the town remained unaffected by the changes that got hold of Vietnam at the end of the millennium. The result is the raw authenticity and humble spirit most visitors cherish in the town today. Hoi An’s charming character lies somewhere between the architectural abundance left by European colonists and today’s laid-back tranquility.

Most of Hoi An’s jewels reside in the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. A striking mixture of Japanese shrines, Chinese teahouses, and French colonial settlements oozes cultural diversity in the districts. The most iconic landmark is the Japanese Covered Bridge, a rustic wooden bridge that has connected the Japanese and Chinese quarters for over four centuries. Deep in the quarters, you will find aesthetically pleasing elements of both traditions. Some remain preserved, which you can visit on your walking tour around the town.

Merging leisure with a refreshing town setting, Hoi An offers delight beyond entertainment. You can hire a bike and take a ride around An Bang beach to enjoy epic coastal views. Or, spend a couple of hours in one of the silk workshops and have your custom dresses made by skillful tailors.
