Ancient Ritigala Monastery
Ancient Ritigala Monastery is a place ladened with supreme enlightenment deep in Sri Lanka.
Sprawling across a crest of verdant hills on Mt. Ritigala, the ruins of the Ancient Ritigala Monastery are a wonder. They testify to two thousand years of Buddhist heritage deep in the sacred lands. Some 40 kilometers away from Anuradhapura, the monastery grounds seem like a distant extension of the holy city. It strikes visitors with the outstanding austerity of the monuments. Once home to the forest monks of northern Sri Lanka, the monastery remains a site for immeasurable value.
Legend has it that a monk of supernatural powers dropped a pinch of medicinal herbs here as he descended from the mountain. The story likely took roots from a meadow of medicinal herbs and plants. And it is only one of the things that make the mountain so mystical for the modern traveler. As you wander on its rustic lands, you will find much more.
Similar to many forest monasteries, it features double and high platforms. These served as seats for solitary practices of meditation and ceremonial rituals. There is an atmospheric pavement connecting several buildings and leading into the forest. Sublime courtyards, resilient stone bridges, and stark Buddha statues are also within the ruin complex. They make the site a calling card for enduring architecture. But, beyond its apparent luster, you will find solemn feelings as you walk among the ruin complexes. While you are there, look around and let the immense values sink in.
