Shobak Castle

Perched on top of a solitary hill 30 kilometers north of Petra, Shobak Castle reminds visitors of Jordan’s dramatic medieval history. The fortified structure was built by the Crusaders and later renovated by the Mamluks. Like many other forts in the area, Shobak Castle had its share of the fierce Crusades. But, its strategic significance made it last through the ages. It stood as a guardian on the passageway from Egypt to Syria during the most chaotic times in the Middle East.

On the exterior, reinforced triple walls attach to the ground so firmly that it is hard to imagine where the hill ends and the castle begins. These Crusades-era walls have been a source of admiration for the mighty rulers through time. The inscriptions decorating the interior walls, however, were Mamluk additions after the Muslim conquest. Walking among the ruins of the inner part, you will witness an impressive combination of Christian and Muslim influences. The Church of the Crusaders and the catacombs are the highlight monuments. They shed light on the many wars with their tablets and carvings. 

Before you leave, take a look at the stunning wild landscape from one of the watchtowers. The legendary soldiers of medieval times once stood as guardians on these walls. Shobak Castle is an imposing sight laden with an unyielding permanence. It offers a voyage through time at the heart of Jordan.
