Sibiu
Nestling pockets of culture and sophistication, Sibiu will have you wondering where to look first.
Some cities take pride in their cultural scene, others rest upon the laurels of their history. But, Sibiu does nothing more than bewitching its visitors with effortless pleasure. Transylvania’s hippest city is undeniably the cultural capital of the country. Here, the buildings are works of art and the food is tantalizing. Also, an influx of intellectuals paints the city in a cacophony of colors. Some 800 years ago, German settlers founded Sibiu as their headquarters. It blossomed under the influence of Saxons into an architectural wonderland over the years. Add a splash of contemporary culture, and you have yourself a city to fall in love with.
In Sibiu’s slightly crooked streets, medieval structures bring along historical revelations. The focal point of it all is the citadel, lying at the city’s heart, awash in battle scars. Having survived Tatar invasions and Turkish attacks, the citadel is a delight to explore on foot. Give it a try, especially if you are looking to get a taste of medieval Sibiu. A few minutes away, the elegant Brukenthal Palace is further evidence of the city’s opulence. As you wander in the historic quarter, you will soon notice the eyes perched on the roofs of the houses. They earned Sibiu the nickname “The City with Eyes.”
Arts and entertainment are integral to the fabric of local life. Opera houses, music halls, and theatres are a dime a dozen. No wonder why the city became a European Cultural Capital in 2007. From international festivals to more intimate shows, an artistic event occupies almost every day in Sibiu.
