Namaskard
Smoky, atmospheric, and otherworldly: Namaskard could be the sole proof that the earth is alive in the Iceland Plateau. The Martian-like hotspot is part of the gorgeous Námafjall Geothermal Area located in the northeast. And, it never fails to astound with a bundle of alien landforms. Black streams meander on the turmeric land flanked with smoldering mud pools and fumaroles. Wandering in the area requires caution. Any running water form will most likely be boiling. As the scene suggests, Namaskard is all about exhilaration in the Icelandic Firelands.
If there is any downside to this miraculous site, it is the acrid smell of sulfur pervading with every terrestrial exhale. Yet, it is a small price to pay for such a profound natural landscape. Around the mud pots, you will see colors of metallic indigo, lime, and grizzly oranges creating jaw-dropping contrasts.
You won’t see a trace of vegetation in the entire area due to the high acidity of the soil and poisonous fumes. The fumes are perfectly safe for guests as long as the visit is short. Set in the desolate terrain to the north of Lake Mývatn, Namaskard is a savage beauty worthy of a day’s trip.
