Djemaa El Fna

You may recognize Djemaa El Fna from its aerial view resembling a well-lit lego town of tented stalls. Although an undoubtedly visual feast, there is more to it that strikes the senses. From dawn till dusk, Djemaa El Fna is under hectic transition—sweet odors of orange juice and the tinkle of brass cups dominate the mornings, while a jovial buzz rings in the air later in the day as food stalls and musicians begin filling up the square. With a whimsical spectacle on every corner, this is how a day passes in the iconic medina square of Marrakech.

In recent decades, the site has been recognized by UNESCO and put under protection from serious urbanization. As you stroll among the beating heart of ages-old Moroccan traditions, you will get to know the motivation behind its much-deserved Masterpiece status. There is a struggle for preservation against modern times that has become a crucial part of Djemaa El Fna’s history. Still, the carnival cheer is never absent from the quarter. Sided by a souq and alleys brimming with surprises, the main square is under the limelight all year round.  

The setting sun brings about a mystical vibe that is unique to Djemaa El Fna. From snake charmers to monkey trainers, the famous dancing boys and storytellers, extravagant performers of the square begin roaming around and putting visitors in an elated trance.
