Chau Doc
Casually sprawling on the banks of the Bassac River in Mekong Delta, Chau Doc is a water world in itself. It is a frequent destination among travelers passing on the river from Vietnam to Cambodia. You will also enjoy it as a cultural melting pot of Khmer and Chinese traditions. The influence of each is widely existent on the exquisite architecture the city harbors. Nearby, the magnificent Sam Mountain provides a quirky contrast to the serene setting of the town. Whether you are passing by or staying for the night, Chau Doc manages to fascinate with its rustic vibe and hearty locals.
Most visitors come to Chau Doc for the marvelous Tra Su Sanctuary, if not for a scenic passageway to Cambodia. It is where the exquisite birdlife reserve of the Mekong Delta is most happening. Over 70 bird species reside within its thickly populated forest. Exploration by boat through the meandering waterways is a delight. Even if you spot a few birds, Tra Su has plenty to offer in terms of scenery. Trees rise straight out of the water in the wet season, giving way to a heart-stopping view as emerald green reflections fall over the canals.
At its center, Chau Doc peacefully embraces an influx of Cham, Vietnamese, and Khmer culture. Khmer memorial sites, pastel-colored mosques, and Nguyen temples dot the land, all scripted for a sophisticated walking tour. Check out the town’s floating market, as well, to have one last taste of Vietnamese cuisine before you leave for Cambodia.
