Sveta Troitsa Church
Sheltered within the dazzlingly austere walls of Sveta Troitsa Church is Bulgaria’s religious past.
Centuries ago, the people of Ruse built the precious Sveta Troitsa Church of Ruse below ground level to conform to Ottoman rule. Despite its out-of-sight presence, the church retained its appeal as one of the most valued religious sanctuaries in the region. Now, thanks to the accolade of being one of the oldest buildings in Ruse, Sveta Troitsa opens its doors to visitors as an acclaimed cultural monument. A visit will reveal its genuinely old history. And, you will soon find yourself wrapped up in the national values of Bulgaria.
Ottoman guidelines heavily influenced the style of Sveta Troitsa. Seen from the outside, you will notice that the building begins a few meters below the ground. This makes it an authentic Ottoman-era church. The underground interior constitutes an intriguing sight. But, the gist of its architecture is the 19-meter high hexagonal belfry. An equally attractive piece is the iconostasis with vividly bright icons repainted during renovations. Bulgaria’s efforts to honor this elegant structure also brought two chapels to the site. They display historical relics of several important figures.
Harboring an impressive exhibition of Bulgaria’s past, Sveta Troitsa remains at the forefront of Ruse’s cultural scene. You will get to observe spectacular murals and paintings decorating the walls in the nave. While you are there, marvel at the religious scriptures bearing witness to the city’s Christian values.
