Sukhothai
No visit to Thailand is complete without a stroll among the ruins of the old kingdom city Sukhothai.
The glow of the golden age of Thai civilization lingers on Sukhothai to this day, making it one of the chief cities that guard its cultural heritage. Across 45 square meters, the ruins of the Sukhothai kingdom sprawl majestically, drawing travelers with an irresistible allure. And this is not all. Surrounding the region are several old kingdom cities, each with its own promise of boundless admiration. No wonder the name Sukhothai means Dawn of Happiness—the opulence and prosperity of the era still radiates from the partially preserved ruins.
Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the old city is preserved within the boundaries of the Sukhothai Historical Park. The lush landscape of the park makes walking tours delightful. Contained within the park are 21 ruin complexes and four large ponds, which add to the soul-soothing ambiance. The temples of Sukhothai are in the classical lotus-bud shape stupas, while bell-shaped Sinhalese and other architecturally ornate details also exist. Despite its fame, the site doesn’t usually get flocks of tourists. You will have a chance to find the peace and quiet you are looking for surrounded by a spiritual serenity.
The three equally extensive zones of the park cover an entire day of visit in Sukhothai Archaeological Park. Although the scene doesn’t change much throughout the sections, you will find nuggets of aesthetic delight. The Wat Sri Chum Buddha statue is indisputably the most breathtaking. Its slender fingers are the ultimate allure to photographers, and there is often a line to observe them closely. Also worth seeing is Wat Saphan Hin. The ruins of this spectacular temple have some of the best views of Sukhotai.
