Piata Mare

The exquisite architecture in Transylvania’s sociable city Sibiu sets the stage for boundless admiration. And, Piata Mare is the indisputable starting point. The square has been luring passersby with an eclectic collection of buildings since it was built in the Saxon era. In medieval times, the most important public gatherings and executions took place at its center. Today, the sublime figure of the council tower looms over this grand space and stands as the symbol of the city. Take a long, fulfilling stroll, and you will find yourself stumbling upon several photogenic structures flanking it on all sides.

A ravishing 18th-century Catholic church is among the square’s most attractive landmarks. Embodying baroque flair, the building shelters a spectacular Viennese organ worth taking a look at. Not far from it is the General’s House, where the scene starts to get cozier. Together with Casa Hecht next door, they constitute the prettiest corner of Piata Mare as far as most visitors are concerned.

Piata Mare is almost always bustling with congenial sounds escalating from the cafes and restaurants. As the city’s principal square, things are never dull here. You can hang out in one of the cafes, or take a stroll to observe the diverse and dynamic society of Sibiu at its most happening.
