Holy Trinity Cathedral
An eclectic mix of Byzantine, Baroque and Transylvanian architectural styles spice up Holy Trinity Cathedral. It makes the cathedral arguably the most sophisticated structure across Sibiu’s church-studded land. It is a relatively younger building, constructed in the early 20th century as an effort to celebrate the Orthodox faith. The word is that the cathedral’s inauguration was so superb that folks from all over the country attended it. The enthusiasm towards the structure doesn’t seem to have lost its shine ever since. Thousands of locals and travelers flock to the site to revel in its architectural feast every year.
To fresh spectators, the first impression of Holy Trinity Cathedral is always admiration. Its facade is starkly contrasting with brick-red stripes on a dusty yellow, highlighting the arched windows and spires. The cathedral took inspiration from the magnificent Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The traces of it can be seen in its grand dome and naves. Its front view makes it indistinguishable from a classical cathedral. However, it provides a fascinating diversion from the main church scene with Byzantine influences. A visit will reveal how different cultures existed in the region. Also, it will offer insight into Orthodox history.
On the outside, there are charming round mosaics depicting religious stories. More frescoes embellish the dome, adding to the ethereal ambiance of the main hall. Head deeper into its dimly lit parts. There, you will find that the cathedral’s artistic scene develops into a breathtaking visual feast. Marvel at the paintings from local artists once again before you leave to explore the rest of Sibiu.
