Brasov
Romania’s second city Brasov instantly invokes the quaint spirit of the historical region.
Beautiful old Brasov is improbably imaginative, dramatically caught inside the Southern Carpathian Mountains at the heart of Transylvania. From medieval Saxon walls to soaring Gothic spires, Soviet buildings to modern curves, the town is an eclectic mix of periods. Over the years, its proximity to the Black Sea and Transylvania highlights such as the Bran Castle made it even more popular for travelers looking for the whole package. There is a variety of landmarks tucked away in its cobbled lanes and atmospheric squares. One day is more than enough to savor them at your own pace.
A venerable sight at the focal point of Brasov’s historic area is Piata Sfatului. The square is so pristine and medieval in its looks that you will feel like you are stuck in an 18th-century fairytale. The most worthy-of-seeing churches and museums are here. And, if you follow the streets splintering away from it, you will explore some of the city’s more unbeaten corners. The old town fortifications tell the story of medieval Brasov perfectly. The Black Tower and White Tower hosts exquisite views of the city. As you wander on the side alleys, you will notice whimsical figures and ornaments decorating the building all around. They make walking tours all the more memorable.
The city surrounds Mount Tampa almost entirely—another detail that adds to Brasov’s irresistible charm. Rendered by many as a tacky detail, the Hollywood-style sign on the hill makes sure visitors know where they are. The iconic emerald shade of the Romanian countryside is dominant here, too. And, a short cable car ride leads to panoramic views.
