Balabanov and Georgi Mavridi
The address for Plovdiv’s gatherings, Balabanov and Georgi Mavridi is a community center above all.
Of all the Revival houses in the old town, Balabanov and Georgi Mavridi is easily the most emblematic. This spectacular pastel burgundy mansion was built in the 19th century in the iconic square of Plovdiv. Thanks to its reconstruction in the 70s, it retains its integrity and grace to this day. It may not look like much from the outside. Yet, one step inside evokes time-capsuled Revival Bulgaria at its most vivid. The stunning architectural detail of its interior oozes national splendor. Also, exquisite art and furniture pieces offer onlookers a warming scene.
With two stories and a high entrance, the house strikes at first sight as a typical Ottoman-influenced residence. On the first floor, you will see the traditional household and farming quarters in a high vestibule. Currently, the floor has an art exhibit featuring iconic local painters.
The picture changes dramatically as you ascend to the second floor. There, a spacious glazed saloon delivers what many appreciate as 19th-century opulence. Its most dazzling features are an immaculately ornate wooden ceiling and a precious collection of antique furniture. The soothing ambiance of the house has made it a venue for the most revered cultural events in the town. From literary readings to chamber music recitals, the glassed hall hosts sophisticated events. The most anticipated is the music days, marking the spot with boundless dynamism each year.
