Phitsanulok
Astonishing temples, an emerald countryside, and pockets of legendary history—all in Phitsanulok.
In northern Thailand where the Nan and Khwae Noi rivers meet, Phitsanulok sprawls casually as one of the oldest cities in the country. Its epic history dates back to almost 600 years ago. Although it may seem like not much remains from its Khmer flair, Phitsanulok is today a primary pilgrimage site for Buddhism. With the help of its impeccable location for trade, it is also among the most popular attractions in Thai tourism. But, the true appeal of this uneventful city is its proximity to major spots like Sukhothai. While you are there, visit a few temples and museums, and marvel at the centuries-old heritage hidden in deliciously ornate buildings.
Arguably the favorite attraction in Phitsanulok is Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat. The riverside temple offers a blissful time with its verdant and translucent ambiance. And, the bronze-casted Buddha nestled within the sanctuary is one of the most famous. Thai people celebrate it as the most beautiful Buddha image in all of the country. One of the most distinctive qualities of this statue is the golden halo surrounding the Buddha’s head. The golden black background bolsters the scene’s dramatic looks all the more, offering a thrilling photographic experience. Outside, the solemn air breaks with a mood-lifting dynamism thanks to Thai musicians, loud vendors, and worshippers from around the world.
Right across the temple is Wat Ratburana, a sanctuary less popular but equally dazzling. You will also witness a few intriguing religious practices of Thai Buddhism. Contrary to its looks, Phitsanulok has a lot more to offer in terms of local culture beyond the temples. Seek out the Sergeant Major Thawee Folk Museum for an ethnographic insight. Divided into three traditional Thai buildings, the museum has displays that will make you feel as if you journeyed in time.
