Anuradhapura

The ancient city of Anuradhapura is 2,500 years old. Now a World Heritage site, it is the living and breathing soul of Sri Lanka’s most sacred Buddhist civilization. It has relayed its laurels to this day as a beacon for generations. At its heart, it is an architectural and archeological trove. The sprawl is home to dagoba temples, mystical stone monuments, and several spiritual sites. Taken together, the whole scene of Anuradhapura is achingly beautiful and inspiring.

Soaring up in magnificence, Ruvanvelisaya Dagoba is like the badge of honor that marks the site’s identity. And, it leaves no room for doubt. Once, it was the largest stupa in the world and hosted one of the most sacred ceremonies. Today, devotees believe that some of the Buddha’s ashes lie buried on its grounds. Not far from the dagoba is the Sri Maha Bodhi Tree, adding to the spiritual weight of Anuradhapura. The tree is allegedly the oldest authenticated tree in the world. It is a long-time pilgrimage site among believers. Every full moon, it receives offerings from its loyal worshippers. And, with every sunset, it seems even more otherworldly for the photographer’s eye.

Another highlight in Anuradhapura is the Isurumuniya Rock Temple. It sits on a rocky hillside as it rose into being directly from the ethereal waters surrounding it. The temple is a plain beauty and doesn’t lack the sacred charm of the area. It features a pair of Buddha footprints, delicate murals, and elephant carvings on its side.
