Revolution Square
Bucharest’s focal point, Revolution Square, is a beehive full of motion.
Renamed in honor of Romania’s 1989 revolution, the main square of Bucharest celebrates the end of Romania’s Communist era more vigorously than anywhere else. Revolution Square was the focal point of the two mass revolts that buried the regime into the pages of history between 1968 and 1989. Today, a slate of iconic attractions flank it on all sides. Some of Bucharest’s most memorable photography scenes reside here. And, lanes leading into the depths of the city come together in Revolution Square; the beating heart of Bucharest.
Among the buildings making the site more fascinating are the former Royal Palace, sublime Athenaeum, and the Memorial of Rebirth. The 25-meter memorial may seem slightly tacky at first sight. Meant to resemble a spike piercing a crown, the monument impresses not with its looks but its meaning. Inspect it closely, and you will appreciate its effort to honor the victims of the revolution.
The Orthodox church of Kretzulescu is a divergence among the relatively modern splendor. It summons visitors for a glimpse with its attractive brick-red appearance. But most importantly, the square was the headquarters of the Romanian Communist Party. Nowadays, it hosts the seat of the Senate. Naturally, this is where the national narrative of Romania is most strong. And you will witness historical references embellished with a hint of irony wherever you turn your gaze.
