Inle Lake
Some value it for the bedazzling cultural scenes of Intha fishers floating photogenically on water. Others look to it as the home of yet another mystifying collection of Buddhist pagodas. Regardless of the perspective, Inle Lake is one of the most awaited destinations in Myanmar with its natural beauty and rich history.
The lake covers 116 square kilometers five hours south of Mandalay. It encompasses a much larger area including the four bordering cities and the indigenous villages surrounding it. More than a tourist hideout, it is a source of life and abundance for the people of Inle. On your much-anticipated visit, you will find that everything is afloat here at Inle Lake. From temples to shabby settlements, all things are a part of the cycle of this watery world.
Hop on one of the tour boats, and set out on a journey through the lake’s mystical playground. You will witness fisher folks stand in balance on one leg as they row their canoes for the day’s work. It is one of the most iconic spectacles the lake has to offer. Further along, the wooden Nge Phe Chaung Monastery rises from the water with a genuinely old feel to it. Dating back 200 years, it is the oldest and largest monastery in the region and prized for its collection of Buddha images. But the true jewel of the lake is Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda. The most sacred site in the region, the golden tiered pagoda is home to an annual festival which brings together hundreds of worshippers at its altar.
