Moulay Idriss
In the holy grounds of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, the history of Morocco’s foundational Islamic dynasty lies in grandeur with its founder. The town receives its name from Idris I and has attracted history enthusiasts for being the site of his tomb. The burial possibly lies at a hill overlooking the ruins of Volubilis. As for the magnificent emerald-roofed mausoleum that marks the town center, it was the work of a succeeding Moulay as a signature landmark to honor Idris I. Pilgrims from all over the world have flocked to the site ever since. The spiritual profundity of the town seemed to have escalated after it was open to non-Muslim visitors. Studded with olive gardens and fantastic vistas, much more than epic history awaits in Moulay Idriss.
In the town center, you will find Roman-style monuments and baths. Although scarce, they are perfect sites for an atmospheric stroll. They provide a change in the view among the relatively contemporary buildings. At sunset, head up to the lofty viewpoints of the Grand and Petite Terrasses to watch the vast plains of the Saiss Valley as they get painted in orange and lilac.
