Ajloun
Beyond its iconic castle, Ajloun has a lot to offer in terms of Jordan’s traditional treasures.
As you travel to the north, away from bustling metropolises and ancient cities, pine forests interrupt Jordan’s sand-covered land. Ajloun is a hillside town located right at the edge of this lush countryside, and it is famous for several archeological mounds. Whether for a scenic getaway or a day trip filled with culture, the town is a popular attraction for travelers and locals alike.
Among the historical sites in the region’s limestone geography, Ajloun Castle is the most renowned. This age-old structure steps forth with its strategic importance like its counterpart in Shobak. It was built in the 12th century on the remains of a hilltop monastery overlooking three small valleys. As a classic example of Mamluk military architecture, it has many stories to tell about medieval Jordan. The view of the Jordan Valley as seen from the castle grounds is unlike anything you will in Ajloun.
The modern town of Ajloun has developed around the hilltop through time. There, you can blissfully stroll among village houses and watermills. If you go further north, a reviving break from history is what you will find in Ajloun’s forest reserve. Home to several architectural wonders and the largest forested area in the Middle East, Ajloun is so much more than an agricultural town.
