Red Square
Moscow’s crown jewel and a historical center for political and military events, Red Square is the most weighty site in all of Russia. Nestling the iconic landmarks of the city within its borders, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for three decades. To the south, the magnificent St. Basil’s Cathedral anchors the long-stretching cobbled space. Lenin’s Mausoleum and the crimson walls of the Kremlin stand sentinel over the square in utmost grandeur. Once you step into this fairytale-like plaza, you will immediately feel the profound history engraved in every stone.
State Historical Museum and the Resurrection Gate are among the lesser-known buildings that embellish the square. They feature dazzling shades of red, green, and cream characteristic of Russian architecture. These are relatively older than other structures in the area and have undergone many changes throughout time. Kazan Cathedral soars humbly with a poignant story, having been rebuilt after it was demolished under the rule of Stalin.
Originally designed as a marketplace, Red Square became the celebratory center for military, political, and cultural events. Today, Red Square attracts visitors with its undeniable magnetic force. It is the address of all events, from Christmas celebrations to flamboyant parades on national holidays.
