Silver Pagoda
The grandeur of the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh seems to underscore Silver Pagoda’s elegant beauty. On the outside, there is not much that makes this Khmer-style temple unique among others in the area. But, its true character unfolds once you step in. Over 5,000 silver tiles carpet the floor of the interior. Italian marble walls surround this noble elegance. And that’s only half of it. The temple shelters numerous Buddha statues in gold and priceless jewels. Every year, the grounds of the Silver Pagoda host royal ceremonies. They give a chance for travelers to experience the sacred ambiance firsthand.
Arguably the most sought-out sight in the pagoda is the pristine “Emerald Buddha”, made of Baccarat Crystal. Next to it is the human-size statue of Maitreya Buddha, made of pure gold. Several murals depicting local legends wrap the figures in one fascinating circle. The temple’s possession of such precious jewels and metals was an endeavor of the Khmer Empire to show its riches to the world.
Although most of its treasures got lost after years of looting, the Silver Pagoda is among the most treasured monuments of the empire today. There are so many enchanting statues and figurines adorning it that you won’t want to take your eyes off of them.
