Wilpattu National Park

The land of lakes, the dwelling of Sri Lanka’s wildest creatures, and the evermore safari destination of the country: Wilpattu National Park is a dream come true for the average adventurer. One hundred and six blue-green lakes pepper its land like amulets. Its vast habitat covers over a thousand square kilometers in the northwest of Sri Lanka. Before you even dive deep into its exuberant reserves, the flashy flora will take your breath away. Wilpattu is the largest national park in the country, featuring fewer visitors at any time of the year relative to the more famous parks. You will find its natural beauty stark and untouched. Hearing the constant twittering of birds and the deep sounds of the mammals is an electrifying experience. Jeep safaris are the best way to tour the trails heading deep into the forests in the park. With numerous species of birds, mammals, and reptiles, the area promises a fairly good chance of spotting animals. But the true prize that every visitor dreams of is a glimpse at the agile leopard.

With the rising concerns regarding deforestation, Wilpattu National Park is now one of the most important areas in Sri Lanka.
