Alexandria
Dramatically caught between old and new, Alexandria’s beacon of light still burns to this day.
Some 2,000 years ago, Alexandria was a symbol of wisdom and knowledge. It was an imperial city of abundance crowned with the Great Library and Pharos Lighthouse. Today, it is the largest city on the Mediterranean with great industrial significance. Yet, little of its matchless collection of historical sites remain. A stroll among the modern city’s roaring heights immediately evokes a sense of splendor. Try it for yourself and open the gates to the old Alexandria.
On the iconic Corniche Road, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina charms as a memorial to the Great Library. Further along, you will see Fort Qaitbey in the place of the Lighthouse of Alexandria (Pharos). The lighthouse was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Its fame continues to act as the star attraction of Alexandria. Although not as imposing, the fort is also a rewarding sight. Head there for an escape from the bustling downtown with its beautiful Mediterranean view. Some older gems rest underground in the Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa. There, classical Egyptian architecture unites with a touch from the Greco-Roman era. For a memorable photographic experience, seek the catacombs. You will revel in a fusion of culture and aesthetic beauty.
At night, Alexandria turns into a dazzling port city under a thousand lights. The colorful markets and restaurants are the places to be for eclectic tastes. So buckle up, and savor what the city has to offer.
